BIO-BASED NANOCOATINGS
Nanocoatings provide cost-effective solutions to industries with demanding applications and performance requirements. The use of nanomaterials results in performance enhancements in wear and corrosion resistant coatings and demonstrates significant enhancement in outdoor durability, and vastly improved hardness and flexibility compared to traditional coatings.
Biosilico, an amorphous silica derived from rice husk is a bio-based nanomaterial produced by BSB that can be customised for the manufacturing of a large variety of nanocoatings. Biosilico offers a range of hydrophilic silica as matting agent, anti-settling and anti-sagging additive for the manufacture of high-performance coatings. The key characteristics that can be customised in Biosilico includes:
-
improve scratch and abrasion resistance,
-
corrosion resistance,
-
impact resistance,
-
increase tensile strength, and
-
easy-clean properties.

Following the development and commercialisation of hydrophilic additives for nanocoatings, further R&D was conducted to expand the range of Biosilico products. This has resulted in the successful development of both Hydrophobic and Superhydrophobic silica.
Hydrophobic coatings can be applied on a variety of substrates including glass, metals, polymers, ceramics, ship hulls, concrete and textiles.
Coatings of hydrophobic nature are actively used in a large range of industries such as Automotive, Aerospace, Construction, Textiles, Medical, Electronics and so on for its many functions as listed below:
-
Anti-corrosion
-
Anti-fouling
-
Anti-microbial
-
Self-cleaning
-
Water repellent
Superhydrophobic coatings can be applied on a variety of substrates including glass, metal, ceramics, concrete, textiles, and others.
Superhydrophobic coatings functions can be summarised as below:
-
Anti-corrosion
-
Anti-icing/wetting
-
Anti-fouling
-
Anti-microbial
-
Self-cleaning
Detailed applications of Biosilico for Paints & Coatings industry including details of its benefits and characteristics are described in the attached Brochure and Application Guide.
